WSS & SBS Installation Issue & Resolution
November 26, 2003
Summary:
We have discovered an issue affecting any new installations of Windows
SharePoint Services and Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Standard and
Premium editions) or upgrades of Windows Small Business Server 2003
(Standard and Premium editions.) This installation issue will affect
customers installing Windows SharePoint Services and Windows Small Business
Server 2003 or upgrading Windows Small Business Server 2003 after November
24, 2003.
This issue is due to an error in the way certain DLLs are validated.
Currently, the installation process incorrectly interprets some DLLs as
invalid when in fact they are valid.
We are currently working on a software update to Windows SharePoint Services
and Windows Small Business Server 2003 that will resolve this issue. We
expect to deliver this update in the next several days. If our timing
changes we will provide our customers with additional information
immediately. We have also outlined steps that customers can take in the
meantime that will assist them in working around this issue.
We continue to receive positive customer feedback regarding both Windows
SharePoint Services and Windows Small Business Server 2003. We remain highly
confident in the quality of both products and are committed to solving this
issue as quickly as possible.
This installation issue affects customers in the following scenarios:
For customers installing or upgrading to Windows Small Business Server 2003,
the following error message may be received: "An error occurred while
installing Windows SharePoint Services and creating your Intranet site."
For customers with systems pre-installed with Windows Small Business Server
2003, the following error message may be received when browsing to the Small
Business Server intranet at http://companyweb/: "You are not authorized to
view this page. You might not have permission to view this directory or page
using the credential you supplied."
For customers who have previously installed Windows SharePoint Services
and/or Windows Small Business Server 2003 prior to November 24, 2003,
functionality in these products is not impacted unless you are attempting
major configuration changes such as reinstalling Windows SharePoint Services
on Windows Server 2003.
